Hydrating Hibiscus Tea is the Perfect Summer Drink

Hydrating Hibiscus Tea is the perfect summer drink for many. Let’s face it, water is boring. Important yes, but boring. It can be difficult to make sure we’re getting enough hydration throughout the day, without getting distracted by other less than healthy options.

But fear not, there’s an answer!

Hibiscus Tea Origins and Use

Agua de Jamaica (Jamaican Water), or hydrating Hibiscus Tea is a healthy, vibrant tea that can help add the flavour to your daily water intake without increasing your sugar intake! The bright red colour of the hibiscus tea makes it the perfect addition to any summer hydration routine. Originally from Hibiscus sabdariffa or roselle, hibiscus is a type of flowering plant native to India and Malaysia. Hibiscus tea has been used for centuries in folk and traditional medicines. It is believed that hibiscus is used to lower blood pressure, stimulate diuretic effects, reduce high cholesterol, in addition to a host of other benefits.

How to Brew Hibiscus Tea

For the best brewing results, add a teaspoon of dried hibiscus leaves for every 250ml of water. Allow the tea to infuse for about 5 minutes. It will become a rich red colour. Once it reaches this point it’s best to remove the hibiscus petals or strain. This will avoid the flavour staying too far onto the bitter side. If you prefer things a little sweet,  you can add honey, maple syrup or stevia.

Cold Infused Tea is best when you combine 1 cup (250mls) of cold water per teaspoon (2g) to and chill in the fridge for 10 hours.

This tea is equally nice served hot or cold. It has a slightly tart flavour, very similar to cranberry. It’s also high in vitamin C and antioxidants. I keep a bottle of this in my fridge and on my desk all year round!
